  6. This chapter really serves a purpose in bringing the carpet factory to life and characterizing Karim. The reader is given insight about the type of person Karim is. Basically he is almost 17, and and fingers are now too thick to build carpets, so he is the master's right hand man. Karim is rude, saying things like, "Shut up, stupid!". The text also says he has, "no imagination" and that he, "did everything the master wanted." There is also characterization of Iqbal. Fatima presents him as a symbol of hope.
